Hello to those who enjoy a challenge,

I’m pleased to be able to write about my impressions of the year I spent in Lourdes de Blanc-Sablon. Travelling from southern Québec to the village was an odyssey in itself. The trip is beautiful and is a golden opportunity to discover the Maritime provinces. The setting gradually takes on a maritime feel with the sea, the docks, the fog and lobster. You take a gigantic ferry and can then explore Newfoundland. Wow! If you like the outdoors, you’ll love this island, especially Gros Morne National Park. After enjoying Newfoundland, you decide to continue your journey and finally arrive in Blanc-Sablon. There you’ll find a quaint village that’s a great place to live and work. Moreover, if you like all kinds of fishing, you’ll be well served! I’m talking to salmo salar enthusiasts in particular! Teaching in an isolated village in the Lower North Shore is a stimulating challenge, but quite doable thanks to the orientation help provided by the members of the school staff. The Lower North Shore is nature in its purest form. You’ll have unforgettable experiences that will make your stay a one-of-a-kind adventure.

I was either in the office doing administrative work and coordinating projects or out in the community building relationships with local partners to support the projects I was implementing to support the community and school. I learned a lot in this position, not only how to develop an organization but work with diverse groups of people in the education, business and community sectors to respond to common needs. I learned needs assessments and evaluations for every program I implemented to help the school and the community. I learned to manage projects, meetings, volunteers, staff and students. I worked with government officials, staff in the education system and community members and coordinated to bring them together on a regular basis. Hardest part of the job was getting a lot done with limited funds. Most enjoyable seeing the impact and change that can be made when given the opportunity to make a difference.

The time I spent in Lourdes-de-Blanc-Sablon was, regretfully, too short. Having just finished university, I was invited to complete the school year with some fabulous students in a highly stimulating environment. That’s how, fortunately, I came to join the dynamic Mgr-Scheffer school, where I discovered a motivating work environment and fantastic colleagues. I also benefited from a school staff whose professionalism is unparalleled. It was a very enriching experience for me both professionally and personally. In fact, the people of the Lower North Shore are very welcoming and generous. I was also fortunate to be able to benefit from very mild weather, which allowed me to admire the beauty of the gorgeous, unique landscapes in this region. This first teaching experience will certainly be etched forever in my memory.

Teaching in Lourdes-de-Blanc-Sablon is an outstanding experience. Upon arriving, you’re amazed by the beautiful scenery all around you. You quickly notice the salty ocean smell and the sound of the waves, but you also see how the mood of the place changes depending on the weather. Your attention is drawn to the incredible landscapes that surround this corner of the Lower North Shore when you take walks in the midst of nature. You’ll be greeted by a very dynamic school staff, that offers invaluable support. The local people are also very welcoming and kind. Much to my surprise, some already knew my name and my new job before I had even met them for the first time. New teachers definitely don’t go unnoticed, which is comforting, because you quickly become part of the community. You’ll also be fortunate to work in a school where the students are very dynamic, involved and keen to learn and succeed. Life in the school is very motivating and enriching. I would like everyone to enjoy such a stimulating experience.

Hello, if you’re a foreigner in Lourdes-de-Blanc-Sablon, you’ll be spotted right away, but everyone will take care of you and meet your needs. The first favour they’ll do for you is to offer you a ‘lift’ because public transportation is nonexistent. I arrived in August, and people were already talking about winter, the locals’ favourite season. That’s not what I had heard last year when I arrived in Montreal. I was a bit surprised at first, but I quickly understood when I saw the snowmobiles emerging like ants. As for the school, the entire staff welcomed me with open arms. I immediately saw that I was surrounded by a very dynamic team that was committed to its students. They go further than simply teaching the Ministry’s program—they also play the role of parents. I must also highlight the overwhelming participation of the students in the different sports activities.

Attended all staff meetings and professional development workshops. Having to deal with thousands of students in both jobs has not only given me confidence, patience, and ambition for excellence, but it has also taught me how unwavering support can really make all the difference in someone’s life. That is the ultimate goal. Great co-workers very friendly and relaxed atmosphere. Keeping on motivating the students was sometimes the hardest part of my job. It has taught me how to persevere and to effectively problem solve by approaching the situation with an open mind while developing different strategies to resolve and take charge. The most enjoyable/rewarding part of my job was to make a difference is someone’s life.

My three-year stay on the Lower North Shore as a teacher was rich from both a professional and personal perspective. As a science and math teacher, I was able to teach the entire secondary school curriculum for these two subjects in a very short period of time; an unexpected opportunity for a young teacher fresh out of university. The low student-teacher ratio allows us to devote more time to planning quality learning activities and a lot less time on correcting countless assignments. In addition, the small number of students gives us an opportunity to fine-tune our one-on-one teaching skills in order to meet our students’ needs. The Lower North Shore is a vacation destination that is becoming increasingly popular among outdoor enthusiasts, and for good reason—it’s a fantastic environment for those who love wide open spaces. Many outdoor activities can be enjoyed there, provided that you organize your outings yourself.

It’s a unique experience that I have recommended to friends, who, like me, enjoyed the beautiful scenery of the Lower North Shore.

Working as a guidance counsellor at the Centre de services scolaire du Littoral is a very enriching experience, both professionally and personally. The only school service centre in Québec with special status, it extends from Kégaska to Blanc-Sablon, including Port-Menier (Île d’Anticosti) and serves both an English and French-speaking population. The territory, covering some 460 kilometres, includes ten anglophone and four francophone villages in an area not connected by the highway system. The number of inhabitants in these villages ranges from 100 to 1,000. Two Innu communities, La Romaine and St-Augustin, also form part of this territory.

This vast land of freedom has no vocational training centre (CFP), no college and few businesses. In winter, the best way to travel from one village to another is by plane, boat, or snowmobile. Working and living on the Lower North Shore requires resilience, a love of nature and outdoor activities (walking, snowshoeing, hunting, fishing, hockey, boating, snowmobiling, riding an ATV, and whale and iceberg watching) and the desire to become part of this community of friendly, helpful and generous people. Of course, the lifestyle is very different from that of the city. Here, when you travel, you never know exactly when you’re going to leave or when you’ll be back!

More than anything I have ever done, I love being in the classroom running activities and taking charge of vastly different groups of young adults. I was given free rein in my classes, which does not always happen in teaching, and it allowed me to be my best creative self. The small staff allowed for great collaboration. The unique set-up, sharing a building with another school (a French secondary school) led to great opportunities for expanding my bilingualism and networking outside of my social circle. I was asked to accept a promotion to Vice Principal as I had/have the best classroom management skills on staff, but declined the offer as, at that time, as I wanted to focus on teaching and not managerial tasks. While at this high school, I also developed my technological skills, developed the yearbook, created a book club, won a literacy award from the province of Québec and gained confidence in my abilities.

Hi! My name is Marie-Claude Caron and I work for the Centre de Services Scolaire du Littoral. I’m pleased to be starting my 7th year of teaching at the Mgr-Scheffer school in Lourdes-de-Blanc-Sablon, a delightful village with a population of approximately 1,500 on the Lower North Shore. I’m a special education teacher and have seven marvelous and kind students. Last year my partner and I left the Middle North Shore to go work in an urban area, but we so missed the friendly people, wide-open spaces and, above all, the freedom, that we wanted to return to this remote area. It may be far, but it is not isolated. With all the services available, equal to or better than what you’d find in a city, the village is a dynamic place. All the comings and goings by plane and boat, with connections to Newfoundland and the Maritime provinces, add to the liveliness of the area. Here, you’re not a number. People want to get to know you. The arena, the hockey tournaments, snowmobiling, lakeside camps, fishing and all the community activities allow young and old alike to take advantage of what the region has to offer. On the Lower North Shore, stress is nonexistent and people take the time to live life to the fullest. The abundance of pure, fresh air, the sea stretching out to infinity, the rare and fragile vegetation, the waves crashing against the rocks, the beach, the plains and, above all, the friendly, warm and helpful people: these elements will surely convince you of the appeal of this area. To conclude, here’s what I tell those who think it’s too far: ‘Happiness comes by letting go of the familiar.’

Teaching at the Mgr.-Scheffer school is a priceless experience. Engaging every day with students who are involved and attached to their community is motivating for sure. Teaching these young people becomes increasingly rewarding as the days go by. You can’t help but want to give them your all despite the rather heavy teaching load due to the different subject matters that you teach. Their positive energy, enthusiasm and interest make these young people very endearing and motivate you to get more involved in the school. If you are creative and want to challenge yourself, you’ll be more than satisfied at the Mgr-Scheffer school. The school staff and management are always willing to listen to your ideas and your wildest projects and get involved. A great feeling of team spirit pervades the school. Outside the school, the sound of the waves and the smell of the salt water allow you to re-energize after a busy day. Walking through the streets of Lourdes-de-Blanc-Sablon or alongside the ocean on your way home gives you a chance to chat with the warm and courteous inhabitants. A teaching stint at Lourdes-de-Blanc-Sablon goes by way too fast. After a year, you’ll surely want to stay, as I did. Thanks, everyone!

Up to now, teaching at Lourdes-de-Blanc-Sablon has been the most enriching experiences of my life. It has had a big influence on my life professionally, of course, but on a personal level, I’d even say that it has changed me forever. My adventure began in the summer of 2014 when I had just accepted a one-year replacement contract at the Mgr-Scheffer school. As soon as I got off the plane, I met the director, who accompanied me to my new apartment and gave me a tour of the local area. From the very start, I was captivated by the beautiful landscapes that surrounded me, not to mention the Gulf, which stretches as far as the eye can see. On a side note, I had a chance to see the most beautiful sunsets at Lourdes-de-Blanc-Sablon, as well as the most gorgeous northern lights. The school director wasn’t the only person to give me a warm welcome—so did everyone at the grocery store that night. They took an immediate interest in my arrival and I had a chance to practice my English with some of them. A few days later, I had a chance to meet my students for the first time and I must say that it was absolutely perfect. The schoolchildren are great! There’s no major discipline problem at the school. The students are motivated and always have something interesting to tell you or teach you. The number of students per class is relatively low, which is excellent because it allows us, as teachers, to more easily build close relationships and provide them with quality education that emphasizes individualized assistance. I was also fortunate to have a class in which every student had their iPad, another great way of incorporating information and communications technologies (ICTs) into teaching. I had a lot of fun teaching at Scheffer because I developed an incredible bond with all my students. They had an impact on me and taught me a lot about myself. I will be forever grateful to them for this. They helped me develop into the teacher I am today.

Another thing that I loved about the school was the overall atmosphere there. Everyone gets involved and respects one another. The climate at the school is fantastic and I formed friendships that, I hope, will last a long time despite the distance that separates us now. Also, no one should worry about not having a social life at Lourdes-de-Blanc-Sablon because there is definitely a social scene, whether it’s parties at the arena, their famous hockey tournaments or heading ‘into the interior’ with your snowmobile to really chill out and enjoy life in a camp in the middle of the wilderness. If you have a chance to go to Blanc-Sablon and explore the inland regions (hence the local expression, ‘head into the interior’), you’ll realize how exceptional it is to see scenery breathtaking enough to grace the pages of National Geographic. And you’ll see what it is to be able to fish in lakes and rivers that are almost untouched by humans or to go kayaking amidst huge icebergs that floated down from Labrador. Words can’t describe how much I loved the amazing year I spent with so many fantastic people and students and I look forward to being able to go back and see all my friends again.

Thanks for everything! See you soon!

Deciding to work in Lourdes-de-Blanc-Sablon means first and foremost choosing an excellent quality of life. The wide-open spaces, the sea within view every day, the hospitable locals and the open-mindedness of the young people are what make this community so rich. Of course, it’s an experience with its share of challenges: you have to be able to juggle many skills and you can’t be afraid of working. But it’s all worthwhile and the greatest reward is to see the children’s sparkling eyes as they enthusiastically participate in class. That’s when you congratulate yourself for having chosen this little slice of paradise.

Working at the LBPSB has given me so much joy over the last ten plus years. Between two incredible schools, I’ve made some even more incredible friends and have worked with some of the best teachers. The LBPSB has allowed me to grow as an educator, as an individual, and has been part of my personal journey. I have never lacked the opportunity to better myself and I stay excited for what’s ahead from year to year.

I just spent six weeks, in November and December, in Rivière-Saint-Paul for the last internship of my bachelor’s in teaching French as a second language at Université Laval. I worked a little bit at the high school, but mainly at the Mountain Ridge School, the primary school located in Old Fort Bay. Having never been to the Lower North Shore, I really didn’t know what to expect, other than a shock compared to the internship that I had just completed a few days earlier in the capital of Ireland. The warm and welcoming little community charmed me and made me feel at home for the too-brief period of my internship. It was a wonderful experience, both professionally and personally, that allowed me to discover a region that I never thought I’d visit. Now I’d like to go back, and I recommend it to everyone!

    Thank you for everything, again!

Working for the LBPSB is not just a job, but an amazing life lesson. It has taught me so much more than just being a co-worker, but also the impact that it has on everyday lives. It is amazing when the people that you work for genuinely care about the services they provide, and the staff who work hard with them to achieve and bring these everyday goals to life. I couldn’t be more proud and honored to learn and grow with the best.”

You’re not a number to the board. Unlike other boards, there is a more personal feel to it. Your colleagues aren’t just colleagues, and your principal isn’t just your boss. It’s almost like we’re a bunch of friends working together in a tight-knit community that provides the best possible education to the kids. Plus, the support, the small classes, the freedom of choice, and the coaching opportunities clearly don’t hurt!
