Position Description
NATURE OF WORK
This temporary replacement position is currently available at REACH School, supporting students aged 4–21.Working with a multidisciplinary team to apply special education techniques and methods, in keeping with an individualized education plan (IEP) designed for students with intellectual and physical disabilities, behavioral challenges, or learning difficulties. The role involves supporting students through a modified educational program or the CASP Program, under the direction of the school principals.
DESCRIPTION OF TASKS:
Collaborate as part of a multi-disciplinary team to apply special education techniques and methods in therapeutic programs tailored to students with intellectual and physical disabilities or behavioral challenges.
Work collaboratively with teachers to review, modify, and develop IEPs under the supervision of the Principal.
Support students in their academic programs as detailed in their IEPs.
Develop and implement appropriate programs and strategies for each student, tailored to their needs, for inclusion in the IEP.
Assist students with personal care needs, including dressing, eating, toileting, and diaper changing as required.
Apply and organize activities during lunch and recess to promote integration and participation of students with special needs alongside their peers.
Provide physical support for mobility and daily tasks, including assisting students in wheelchairs and aiding in transfers or repositioning.
Record and maintain accurate progress reports and documentation for each student.
Collaborate with parents and community services to support the implementation of IEP recommendations.
Assist with crisis management and implement techniques such as TEACCH, where applicable.
Support staff by providing strategies and pertinent information about students, including advice for teachers, daycare staff, and lunch supervisors.
Organize and supervise on-the-job training opportunities for students with special needs.
Train and support less experienced technicians and coordinate support staff in the implementation of programs.
Work across multiple locations if necessary.
Perform other related duties as required.
STUDENT PROFILE:
Students at REACH exhibit two or more of the following criteria and benefit from a modified educational program:
- Moderate to severe intellectual disabilities consistent with DSM-5 diagnostic criteria.
- Global developmental delays, particularly in younger students.
- Maladaptive behaviors corresponding to their diagnoses.
- Concurrent diagnoses, such as ASD or severe communication disorders.
- Eligibility for an MEQ handicap code.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Hold a Diploma of College Studies (DEC) in Special Care Counselling or a diploma or attestation recognized as equivalent by the competent authority.
- Hold a certificate dated no more than three (3) years attesting to the successful completion of a standard first aid course of at least eight (8) hours or a refresher course of at least six (6) hours.
- Crisis management, TEACCH training is an asset.
OTHER QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bilingualism (English and French).
- Ability to handle physical effort and tasks that may involve managing aggressive behaviors (both verbal and physical).
- Flexibility and adaptability to changes, with the ability to take initiative and work cooperatively.
SALARY: $27.01 to $38.87 per hour according to qualifications and experience.
